At a time when our Earth is suffering from abuse, it is wise to remember people who were able to live in harmony upon it... a Hawai'ian pounds the family poi.
The Blount Report is actually 1/3 of the House Foreign Relations Committee Report of 1894, officially titled "Affairs in Hawaii." It was prepared by Representative James Blount, who was sent by President Grover Cleveland to assess conditions in Hawaii after the Hawaiian Republic had been forcibly taken over by the "Committee of Safety," i.e. the American Sugar Planters.
The Blount Report details the best basis for claims by Hawaiians that they were ripped-off, and it is a U.S Government Report.
The report is over 100 years old, and the original copies are falling apart and delicate. To read them one has to sit in the reference section of the library and read there. Three years ago a high quality photocopy, bookbound version was issued by the University of Hawaii. 30 copies were produced. They cost $230 each. Most people do not have this kind of money or the inclination to read 1437 pages.
Because it is a basic source document for what is a significant movement, Hawaiian Sovereignty. By making it cheaply and commonly available we are hoping that educators and academics will use it to produce materials for the classroom and scholarly works, and that more people will read the source material itself.
