Introduction

The essence of herbal care is taking responsibility for oneself. For instance, although the Hawaiian herb Olena (Turmeric, cuccurma longa) is used as a powerful weapon for many cultures against sinus infections (anti- bacterial, astringent), it would be foolhardy to expectOlena to cure your problem if you are allergic to dairy products and insist on eating ice cream and drinking milk.

If you find yourself in this position, then it means you have given over responsibility for your health to the great void of uncertainty... perhaps you should go to the doctor and get some magic in a bottle.

Effective herbal use must be accompanied by self awareness and self responsibility. Herbs offer the possible advantages of availability, cheapness (often) and effectiveness (depending upon many factors). They also offer us a link through which to connect with the living biosphere around us directly... to see that we are really connected as a part of this world, and to actively participate with it in healing.

There are also times when there is no substitute for modern medicine. Do not make the mistake of not including it in your quiver of solutions. Just remember that it is your quiver...

If you really look into the question of herbal use in the Indo-Pacific region, you will find that the Polynesians and Asians (through ancient traditions like Ayurveda) have long standing and similar traditional uses for most of the commonly available herbs .
