The district of Kohala, on the Big Island of Hawai'i, has gone through many
changes over the years. Fertile valleys and shores, once home to many Hawaiians,
became a booming plantation and cattle ranching community after western
contact. The closing of the plantations in the 1970's then turned Kohala
into a sleepy ghost town which has since come alive with the development
of huge resorts on the South Kohala coast.
The members of Keawe's Homestead Gang - John Keawe. Al Coit, and Wayne Francisco-
all hail from Kohala. their personalities are as diverse as the phases of
Kohala's history and the various ethnic groups that have settled there,
yet they share a common bond that is rooted in the spirit of Kohala and
its people. The Homestead Gang goes back a long way... John and Al are cousins
who teamed up with Wayne when they all played in a high school rock band.
After high school, they formed Keawe's Homestead Gang and remain friends
to this day.
John Keawe was first recognized as a songwriter in 1979 when his composition
"Ka`auhuhu Homestead" was selected for Homegrown III album. Six
years later, "Big Island Magic" , was chosen for the Hometown
'85 album. In 1989 John released his first album Island 'Touch (Liko Records
LR-1201). Featuring eight new originals.
