   A view "mauka" (toward the mountains) from the trail. If we are lucky, we might spot an I'o, a native Hawaiian Hawk. I'o are an endangered species, but there is a fair sized breeding population (200) in nearby Pololu Valley. They are often seen circling high above, searching for a moment to fall upon their prey.

The lushness of the road gives us an understanding as to why the Ancient Hawaiians made Kohala one of the larger habitation sites. Rainfall is adequate to provide for life. Water is the basis of any civilization. Modern Hawaiians still depend upon this natural bounty to sustain life...
