The ocean here is exposed to the Northerly swell (winter) and to the almost everpresent NE trade swell (wind driven). Hence, the surface conditions are mostly rough and diving conditions are commonly best for the toughened expert.
The surfing area produces the best waves on a sizable East Swell. If the swell is driven by a storm that is close-in (less than 800 miles or so) there can be a stiff current running along the breakwall. There is a spot where the wave turns upon a shallow spot near the breakwater. Many a surfer has had an encounter with the rocks here. Recommended for experts only...
