This is where chief Nu'uanupa'ahu was lured to his death by shark attack , by the treacherous Kalaniopu'u, who knew that he would be attacked and killed by sharks if he surfed here...

The general area is today popularly called swimming pools (After some pools in the cliffs East of here) and, in modern times, the surf spot has acquired this name also. This is a rare day. The wind usually is a howling onshore (the spot faces the ever present Northeast trades). At a larger size the spot turns first (5 to 8 feet) into a large dumping peak that goes nowhere, and then (10 feet and larger) moves out onto the outer (1/4 mile out) reef... if you would care to tempt the sharks...
