Shark History In Kohala

Pierre' Bowman, noted shark hunter, stands ready to harpoon a shark baited with a cow... on the rocky shore at Hapu'u, just East of Kauhola Point. For the results of such a hunt, click here.

February 1867- Ku'oko'a (A Hawaiian Newspaper)

Apparently a chief named Nu'uanupa'ahu, who was a famous surfer from the surfing area of Kawa (in the district of Kau), had traveled to Kohala. Kalaniopu'u, high chief of the island was resting in the area with a number of his advisors and entourage. Kalaniopu'u thought that Nu'uanupa'ahu might be planning to unseat him from power, and so decided to kill him. It must have been socially or politically unpopular to just order his death, because Kalaniopu'u chose to kill Nu'uanupa'ahu by inviting him to go surfing at Kauhola, in Hala'ula, where he knew he would be attacked and killed by sharks.

"Nu'uanupa'ahu, however, battled his way successfully through the sharks , earning the admiration of both chiefs and commoners, who watched him fight his way to shore. Later he died of his wounds at Pololu, where he was buried."*
