Access to the beach was secured in 1982, by a group of Kohala citizens who sued for access rights (asserting they were being denied). The condition of the access road itself is a horrific when it is moist. Do not attempt this without a four wheel drive vehicle unless the weather has been dry for an extended period, and then use a vehicle with plenty of clearance...Shoreline fishing, swimming (ocean and stream) and surfing are popular pastimes here...
The surf is unspectacular, at best..
It is not really steep enough or powerful enough for bodysurfing, and it is too short a ride to be much use for surfboards (longboards in particular). However, there is nearly always some small surf at Kapanaia. Boogeyboarders and children enjoy it for therapeutic sessions.
