The ocean here is exposed to the Northerly swell (winter) and to the almost ever present NE trade swell (wind driven). Hence, the surface conditions are mostly rough .
The surfing area produces the best waves on a sizable East Swell. If the swell is driven by a storm that is close-in (less than 800 miles or so) there can be a stiff current running along the breakwall. There is a spot where the wave turns upon a shallow spot near the breakwater. Many a surfer has had an encounter with the rocks here. Recommended for experts only...The kids Boogeyboard at a break strewn with rocks, which lies in front of the stream which enters the sea at the West side of the park.
