Dolphins

Called Nai'a by the Hawaiians, these amazing animals commonly can be seen in the early morning hours patrolling the area just North of Kawaihae harbor. The road there runs closely along the seashore at a slight elevation, perfect for viewing the large pod (a family of dolphins is called a "pod") of spinner dolphins that may exhibit their "thundering herd" aspect at times, there are so many... typically they move along the shoreline about 100 to 150 yards out from shore, taking turns leaping and spinning into the air.

Residents report that dolphins are very capable of play. They have been spotted engaged in a game of "keepaway" with a leaf 1 1/2 inches long! One dolphin would come up under the leaf and lift it with its fin, turning and swimming away with the other dolphins in pursuit. The first dolphin would then drop the leaf and another would take it up in turn... the game turned really interesting when the dolphins included the resident in the game, allowing them to pick up the leaf... approaching dolphins is prohibited by law, but no law can realistically prohibit them from approaching you..
