Photographer Del Dykes was driving home, on a back road in Kona, when a mongoose ran across the road in front of him. He thought nothing of it, as this is a common occurence. In the next moment this I'o fell upon the mongoose, and pierced its spine with sharp talons, instantly killing it. Del was stunned by this scene and stopped the car to investigate. In spite of the fact that Del is so much larger than the I'o, this brave little bird refused to flee or give up the catch. Instead it puffed itself up as large as it could and stood its ground.
